There are several railway carriage homes in our area, dating from before the war.
Most started as a temporary home, like a caravan, and gradually took root and grew extensions over the years. No planning or building regulations then.
One in particular is beautifully preserved. There are some houses which give away their origins as carriages even though long since corrugated over with new windows, because of the tell-tale length and spacing of the small windows.
One on the cliffs overlooking Cardigan Bay near Aberporth is original and unspoiled by extensions.

Somewhere in Devon I saw a remarkably well-preserved carriage from the early 1800s, used as a hen house.
