I know some of us have experienced decay of sole plates in timber framed buildings and had to repair them, but how about this for a similar problem caused by a rather different reason: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-23685801

Seems like insensitive repair is not a modern phenomenon.
