And, whilst not wanting to be a party pooper, and whilst admitting I'm one of the worst for introducing Mr FD and starting threads on chickens, I'm shocked just now to see that on the home page of this website, the bit where they have a nice looking house and 3 or 4 samples of the questions that get asked on this discussional forum, one of mine had been pulled out: "Making a Georgian style Print Room". Imagine how embarassing it would be if it pulled out "Will this chicken live?" or "Period kermits under pressure" (though I enjoyed that clip Rob!)

Are those topics pulled out automatically by clever computer software, or hand selected by the mods? Do the mods ever read this forum? Do we think the increasing amount of threads on topics that have little to do with period properties will attract or repel new posters? Do I sound like Nemesis?

In order of asking:-

My bet is the latter.

I reckon so, from time to time. But there are only eminences grises, and they can't read everything.

There may be threads that are off-topic, but there are many that are bang on. I think this forum would lose a great deal if we all stuck religiously to property matters only. We're people - and people chat.

Speaking as a relative newbie, I like the banter and the regular visits by Fred. On another website where I am a member, there are quite a number of different forums - but actually few are used in practice, and people use the "fun and trivia" forum over every other. I'd stick with what we've got, I don't think trivia repels visitors (although bitching may :wink: ), and it gives a friendly atmosphere...

Yoru point about the division on other forums is a good one - here's the hen one I sometimes use - personally I think that's just so much division between topics it becomes not very user-friendly

I'd suggest that dividing a forum into multiple subject threads can be counter-productive. It's often difficult to define a subject area that would not overlap with another and it makes it more difficult for people to start a thread if they have to wade through a long list of topics to decide where to start.

I also can't see the benefit. I find it hard to believe it would help people to find information because they'd surely use the 'search entire forum' facility anyway, so any subdivisions would be redundant.

This is a great forum because it is inhabited by people. The format works (which is why it is probably due for a change!) and visiting is one of the highlights of my day.
