Period Odour Removal

On Tuesday my 13 year old threw up on the stair carpet, a flat weave runner from Roger Oates, coating at least three steps. I cleaned it all up but it's stiff rather whiffy. Any ideas? My wife tried sprinkling dry Bicarbonate of Soda over it but this hasn't had much effect. I have read somewhere that rubbing in a paste of bicarb and water, letting it dry, then hoovering it up is effective. Has anyone tied this?

I have not tried it, but I have heard that it is effective, although it may take several applications ( leave it on overnight if possible ). One of my very competent textile collecting friends also recommended white vinegar as a possible remedy for a piece that was smelly and damaged with mould.... not something of mine I hasten to add. Put on and rinse out, guess you could do that with one of those wet and dry vacs.

Vinegar water, baking soda, tonic water..... if he was drinking red wine use white wine although that always seems a waste to me... :lol:

Have had good results on various stains with cold water and white vinegar, followed up later with a certain bright pink bottle of carpet shampoo, which takes away the smell of the vinegar! Vomity Son has now left home, but still need carpet emergency treatment for elderly and careless cat quite often.

We had a similar incident a few years ago and what a dreadful pong! It was probably made worse by being during the summer and the car interior being quite hot for extended periods.

We washed the carpet as best we could but the pong remained. A friend suggested coffee beans so we drove around for a couple of weeks with a passenger side carpet covered in a layer of beans. I was dubious at first because it seemed that the smell of coffee was just masking the pong, but when we removed the coffee beans the pong had gone.

Of course, we didn't run a control experiment so it's possible the pong would have disappeared after a couple of weeks anyway. :lol:

We had a bad smell in the "family bus" after last year's holiday. Sort of a salty, rotting fish kind of smell. I couldn't find the cause - then one day I noticed something wedged down the very end of the rear door pockets, down a gap that was out of sight.

The kids had found some seashells on the beach and posted them in there, except those seashells hadn't been vacated by their original owners........

I can tell you it wouldn't have made a lot of difference even if they had vacated, unless it was quite some time before. I once took some lovely shells away from a Chinese meal, nothing at all left inside. They stank the place out and were quickly thrown away.

My worst car-smell incident involved a pig farm, very "muddy" wellies and a long-lunch with the car parked in the sun...

I'd have thought a carpet cleaner would be a good way to get rid of the diced carrot remnants and the smell. I've hired ones in the past for around £40 when vacating rented houses where the carpets got quite dirty, but the other day I adopted a George, the slightly more sophisticated brother of Henry, which has proper carpet washing facilities in a domestic vacuum cleaner sized unit, which I think is a very good product and can be purchased for a reasonable price!!!

I think my worse car smell incident apart from the milk was fox poo!!! the dog had rolled in fox poo and I hadn't realised,he jumped in the car and we drove off to visit my parents, then the smell hit us! my son was heaving his heart out and I was crying with laughter and heaving at the same time! :lol: when we stopped the car it looked like tar on his back :x
