At school I was in the madrigal choir. Not only did you get to sing an infinite number of hey nonny nos and fa la las but also there was a beautiful boy called Peter, who would walk with me through lovely Stamford to Burghley Park. He never, ever kissed me though, he was too shy, so I always associate madrigals with a lack of manliness!

sackbuts perhaps very occasionally on grand occasions if they were lucky, and of high enough status to be allowed to hear such music, ideally combined with cornetts

virginals very likely if they were rich enough to have them in the house, or knew people who did. Also lute, viols, recorders and obviously most often singing, at home (madrigals, part songs) and in church (metrical psalms, unless it was a grand church or cathedral with a choir). If they were not rich & educated enough then it would obviously be unaccompanied folk songs or nothing, though they would have heard music outside - travelling players in the street etc. even in the theatre. The Globe theatre in London does a good job of recreating the sort of music which could have been played there in Shakespeare's time.
Famous composers - John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Morley, lots of them very active in 16th/early 17th century England. Not I'm glad to say Bob Dylan though Sting has recorded his own very idiosyncratic take on some of the songs of John Dowland. It's a huge subject I specialise in (playing recorder and similar things myself - my wife plays the viol).
If anybody really seriously want to know, when I have time, I could post a few recommended recordings.

interesting , did you know that carol singers first sang in the church and apparently 'carol' means to run around in circles singing , the church got a bit sick of people running around in circles singing so banned them and so they took to singing in the streets?

As an aside, I've sat on that haywain and stayed in Willy Lot's Cottage, which is just to the left of that view, and Flatford Mill itself, which is just to the right.

I wonder if they still let school children run riot on residential field courses these days? :lol:

Sheppard's Verbum caro factus est was written for Mary the First I believe and is characteristic of the more elaborate Latin settings required by Catholic ritual. Pieces composed for the protestants Edward VI and Elizabeth I were more often in the form of shorter anthems in English, but are no less beautiful, eg

Ooh - goose pimples! RVW's Fantasia is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, in my view. It sits up there with Elgar's Enigma Variations (particularly Nimrod) and Samuel Barber's Adagio. The absolute pinnacle of musical achievement, however, has to be Beethoven's 9th Symphony - made all the more heart-stopping by the knowledge that the great man was stone deaf when he wrote it.

Here's part of the final (choral) movement, conducted by Bernstein - a bit ponderous, in my opinion. Von Karajan did it much better, with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (I couldn't find that on Youtube).

i love beethovens 9th , i was listening to it in the car one day with a very pregnant ms robgil and when it kicked off so did our then unborn daughter , ms robgil had to turn it off to quieten her down.
richie blackmore and rainbow did a fairly good job of it on the album the final vinyl.
