Period lifestyle for me means not bathing much.

I haven't bathed or showered since I broke the leg 20 days ago, and immediately prior to breaking the leg I'd run four miles and fallen into a muddy bog. Who needs to bath? I've realised you can save hours if you don't waste it lolling in the bath. That'll be hours to lie in bed with my leg in the air.

OMG MdB - you're running the Grizzly! Good for you and I hope you enjoy it. I can tell you exactly which bit of bog not to run through because it was on the Grizzly route at Branscombe that I broke the leg. We'd done the Stairway to Heaven - beach to Beer Head - turned back though towards Branscombe at the top, and crack... Had to be carried back to near the Mason's Arms in Branscombe which was the nearest point they could get a car.
We might come to Seaton tomorrow to watch you. I'll be the one in the wheelchair :x Could you carry something period property so I'll recognise you? A bucket of lime, perhaps :lol:

I would be very up for that. It is just the complete lack of waistcoat and top hat which may cause issues.

Wasn't it Bess of Hardwick who had a bath once a year whether she needed it or not? How much more "period" than that can you get?

When FF junior broke his arm a week or so before going on holiday, we discovered there are things specifically designed to waterproof a cast. Essentially just a tough plastic bag with a tightly fitting rubber sleeve, a bit like a wetsuit. Anyway, it worked reasonably well and he managed to swim with dolphins as well as other water sports during the holiday. The sleeve wasn't completely waterproof (but then he wasn't exactly careful with it!) and we were a bit worried about the water affecting the two pins that were sticking out of his arm under the cast, but it was all OK in the end. A plastic bag and some duct tape would probably have been just as good.

Anyway, just a thought in case the lack of showering becomes a bit too much - though perhaps not much use if you're actually confined to bed with your leg raised.

Seems like a minute ago that I ditched a vacuum cleaner like that!!! It's hard to believe that life was like that when my Son, now 44, was born--- I suppose I was lucky, I had a little red VW Beetle, a part time job, a Nanny for the boy whenI was at work, a top loading washing machine with a wringer attached, and a belling cooker !! Didn't drink wine or gin, martini was a treat! OH gave me the housekeeping in 10 shilling notes---.

Plaster certainly will be haired by the time it comes off since I can't shave my leg It might even be daubed since A&E plastered it without bothering to wash off the mud, I could probably flog my leg to someone doing up a period property.

Thanks for the advice Flyfisher about the waterproof cast cover. The hospital did give me a leaflet about this but the nurse said just stick your leg in two bin bags and tape it round the top. My problem is we don't have a shower except over the bath, and I can't see a way to get into the bath that's safe - I'm a bit paranoid about falling over again and very wobbly on one leg. Any one with bright ideas on how to get safely into and out of the bath?

Well I made it around the Grizzly though I failed in the more important task of meeting up with Vicky. If she had any sense, she wouldn't have bothered coming out, 2°C isn't the kindest on people stuck in wheelchairs.

On the course, there was the odd water splash and the odd bit of mud and it only snowed a little. I made it around in 3 hrs 51 mins which was OK, the 3/4 mile of running along Branscombe beach shingle really did me in though.

Congratulations, and thanks for the pictures. Branscombe is my favourite place in the world. I holidayed there when I was little, and now we live quite near by. You don't call that proper mud. I do, it was close to the picture of you all crossing the river that I fell over.
