I detest the Daily Maul. It is there to mislead and provoke. The new Range Rover is a fabulous car, better on-road and off-road than any competitor. And it is designed and made in the UK and contributes billions to the economy. Yet the Daily Maul would rather just put it down because some numpty managed to sink up to the axles in mud.

That isn't the latest £200k Range Rover, its significantly older.

Plus, it was the winch that pulled out the Range Rover, not the old series, as much as I wish it was.
That winch could have been stuck onto a rusting hulk and would have still done the job.

There have been plenty of cases where old 4x4s out perform newer ones, but that is invariably down to the driver, or to the fact that the "old 4x4" has had £1000s of modifications.

Range Rovers (with a decent set of tyres) are incredible off road vehicles, and I wish more people took advantage of the option for a free off road lesson that LR gives everyone who purchases a new one to truly appreciate it.

As said above, it was the winch that solved the problem.

But a very large V8 (0-60 in 4 seconds!) would make it a handful on mud: a bit too much torque and it would soon be well dug in. QED.

The Range Rover as standard is indeed superb off road - I just don't see the point in ones like the above where they've spent a great deal of money "blinging" the vehicle up, and in doing so ruining it's off-road ability. I'm sure an Overfinch Range Rover is a superb bit of engineering and goes like stink, but so is an Audi RS4 - no-one would put off-road wheels & tyres on that and jack the suspension up just because it's got 4WD. It's left to it's original purpose of being a fast road car.

A 5 litre Range Rover with massive wheels and blacked out windows isn't exactly the most subtle vehicle on the road, especially if you get it stuck! Hence more money than sense.

Almost anything could have pulled it out, and of course it's the winch which did the job, it's just slightly amusing to see such an old workhorse coming to the rescue of that particular vehicle.

The Daily Mail's journalism lives up to it's usual quality standards of course :roll:
