Kit Kat maker Nestle is trying to give us a break from heart attacks – by reducing saturated fats in the bars by 11%.

It has unwrapped a new recipe reducing artery-clogging oils in the classic four finger-bar from 7.2g to 6.4g. The two finger variety will see a 12% fall from 3.3g to 2.9g.

The chocolate in Britain’s third most popular bar is the same but the filling has changed from vegetable fat to slightly leaner palm oil.

Despite the altered 78-year-old formula, which sells 130 million bars a year, calories will stay at 233.

Palm oil is cheap to buy and produce but causes death and destruction to rain forests and the poor Orangutans I NEVER EVER buy products containing palm oil! but companys are getting crafty by labeling it "vegetable oil"!! :twisted:

Calories, schmalories, Kit-Kat is brain food. Your brain burns at least 20% of your metabolic energy, so it needs feeding, particularly at those critical times of the day when you are doing your most important sitting down and considering.

In my qualified* opinion the Kit-Kat, properly administered with a nice cuppa tea, is responsible for the great majority of the most creative design and constructional decisions that we make, and any attempt to modify its recipe is likely to be deleterious to our precious architectural heritage.

* I should add that my self-awarded qualification is in Kit-Kat eating, not architecture.

No reaction from Penners after that comment but interestingly there was a letter in the Irish Daily Mail a couple of days ago about the difference between the taste of KitKats around the world...I;ll dig it out tomorrow along with a picture of the Aldi kitkat... 8)

The letter in the Irish Daily Beast read something like this with the title…

Same KitKat? Fat chance! (Good pun there I reckon)

With some amusement the writer reads that changes to the fat content of the KitKat will not affect the taste. Her partner and herself took a round the world trip and did a taste test of KitKats in various countries and says they were all different. Some were very sweet, some without a chocolate taste and others bland. Australia was the sweetest, New Zealand the tastiest and Canada the most chocolate.

She finishes and I quote…
“KitKats are obviously made to suit the taste buds of each country. Let’s see if the taste does change with a new formula”

The Aldi kitkat type...

I believe the regular chocolate ones in Singapore are imported from Australia. Next trip I shall have to bring some and we can have an official PPUK blind taste test!
