Period Joinery

Hi

Great Forum, very interesting.

I am a Joiner, and having recently set up my own workshop I am trying to find out as much as I can about Joinery styles from different periods in history. I find that working on projects that involve matching period details much more rewarding than some of the more modern MDF style work that I get. I think that the more that I know about the subject the better the chance that have of getting the work that I enjoy. Do any of the members here have any links to any websites that have this sort of information or can you recommend any books that would be relevant?

Just in case me mentioning my profession contravenes any forum rules, this is not an advert, just a genuine request for information!

If you do some searching of the forum posts a short while back several books were recommended for exactly this sort of thing, can't recall exactly when or by whom adn I have to go and fetch my wife now, so had better not stay looking for you. :wink:

SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) has a good book selection. click here

Likewise the Victorian Society click here

You might find some useful stuff there. Depending on where you live, you may also find that your local authority planning department has some publications giving guidance on local styles, for restorers of period buildings.

i am very jealous of you! period details eh?, Victorian, Georgian, Jacobian, Tudor. wide range here, I think I have listed them in order of whats out there. I suppose we could also include, Pop art, Habitat, Mock tudor (1930s), Bauhehaus(SP.?) copies / Art deco 1930s, Arts and crafts and finally Edwardian (sort of under stated Victorian). I suppose some one will chip in to support some other style - I apologise for neglecting their favorite period. Oh yes there is also vernacular stuff/ ways of doing things that are a bit different from the national pattern.
Quite a bit of studying to do here!
As it is likely that your commisions would come primarily from local folk, it might be a good start to mug up on the local stuff. Visit your local architectural salvage yard and get a feel for whats available and in what styles (you might have to match mouldings for instance).
As a bit of bedtime browsing there is an architectural dictionary available online, unfortuanately , its american .

The Brooking Collection Workshops look very interesting, I will try to find out dates of any future workshops and try to attend.

I managed to get a copy of Stephen Calloways "the Elements of Style" - "An Encyclopedia of Domestic Architectural Detail" which appears to be quite comprehensive.
