What's puzzling is that a number of the works appear to be in relief rather than intaglio. Or maybe that's just a trick of the angle of the lighting.

Yea, I agree Penners...intaglio is too much work for doodling and beyond the skill of your average medieval bloke I imagine, whiling away his lunch break waiting for the turnips to cook

The caption on the first picture says it was "etched" so the fact it looks the other way is probably just a photographic trick.

Not so much a photographic trick, more a consequence of how we perceive such things. Here's one of my favourite examples. Even when it's quite clear how the illusion is created, it's still impossible to stop seeing it . . .

Amazing! It's a much more sophisticated illusion than the old one that fools you as to whether a face is in relief or intaglio.
