Oh, I so want to go and see more Sexy Rexy stuff. Already made the pilgrimage to Plas Newydd to see the unbelievable mural and also to Brighton Pavilion to see his lovely spirit of Brighton. Plus I'm now very busy recreating, in fabric, the pelmet that's seen in this trompe l'oeil tent room, and I'm so grateful to him for making it so copy-able.

Rex Whistler's brother, Laurence, went to my Alma Mater, as did his (Laurence's) son, Simon. Both Laurence and Simon became accomplished and famous glass engravers and Simon was a talented viola player.

There's an amazing glass prism in Salisbury Cathedral, which is a memorial to Rex, engraved by Laurence. It's a wonderfully clever piece of art - have a look at it here:

You mentioned Plas Newydd - wasn't Rex Whistler chucked out of there by the Marquess, because he'd had it off with His Lordship's daughter? I think he also did a nude painting of her - proof if proof were needed!

Such transgressions are so much easier in these days of smartphones and social media - do the deed and the photo can be on facebook within minutes. Saves all that messing about with canvas and oils.

Ah yes, but some sacrifices must be made to retain a youthful demeanor. A sprinkling of poor grammar and text speak and you could easily pass for a spotty teenager. Better that than some of the real life procedures which are needed to erase the ravages of time.

Absolutely! I like the lived in look - sags and bags and dents and dings to match our period homes. But LadyA lives in an extremely smart city, and is doubtless under pressure, whereas in the deepest English countryside it's fine to be grey and floppy in wellies and dressing gown, and dressing up ( which is rare and unnecessary) involves dusting down something very mismatching in tweed and floral print. My father still wears the suits he bought in the 60s. And very nice he looks too!

And yes, poor Sexy Rexy's doomed love affair with Caroline Paget, if I remember the story right. She didn't really love him but insisted on running round naked with her girlfriend, who she did love, and he was driven mad and hurled himself headlong into war and an early grave.

Sadly "needed" is indeed the correct term, cellular replication and mutation being prone to malfunction the more times you do it.

:lol: but yes, correct, to an extent. In the UK there is an acceptance of eccentricity and admiration for a certain old money style that looks as though it isn't trying too hard ( the pictures from Lady Annabel Goldsmith's summer garden party would serve as a rather good illustration ). That isn't generally true in parts of Asia where there is a lot of "new" money. It causes much confusion when you dress like the maid but aren't the maid, and as for getting out the toolbox to assist the worker who has arrived to fix something without the correct apparatus...................... :shock:

Fashion must match its environment, but off to look at Lady Goldsmith's garden party for inspiration before I put on my scarf and wellies ( I've ditched the dressing gown, it's too hot, but the wellies are pretty good protection against the nettles)
