Period Eglu

Hello, has anyone got or has had an Omlet Eglu Cube? I was just wondering if they are worth £699 price tag. Our old chicken shed is getting very shoddy and needs replacing so should I fork out for an expensive cube or there other good alternatives? I must add that we want a moveable coop so we can take them to relatives for the holidays. We used to have a lovely neighbour to come and look after them but sadly not any more :?

My brother in Norwich has had an eglu for several years. His flock of three seem to do OK, in that they tend to live more than a year and keep him and his wife supplied with eggs and then some.
As I'm sure you know better than I, chickens are marginal in this country, and anything that makes it easier to observe the scrupulous cleanliness that keeps them alive has to be worthwhile.
After all, they're never going to be a paying proposition, so the £42 annual loss of interest on your £699 outlay is neither here nor there.

If its plastic appearance conflicts with the period decor, you could always paint it a fetching green, or whatever matches the house.
Go for it, I'd say.

We had an original Eglu and it was great. The runs are too small really, but we let ours free range.

They hens loved the eglu, and we had no trouble with rats or foxes as they are tucked up safely inside.

The only problem with them is that they are expensive and because of that can be a target for thieves - ours got stolen one night. My advice would be to keep them well out of sight.

They are also quite heavy, so moving them around too much can be a task.
