We had dinner with some Friends ( non PPUKers) the other evening, and were highly amused to be offered a pinch of snuff with our coffee---- anybody else tried this ?
It was Prince Regent Snuff,--certainly clears the head!!

Having recently acquired an antique snuff mull - a kind of communal snuff box - I now know how to fill it! It dates from about 1850.

Does anyone know the etiquette surrounding the use of snuff? I assume it was just a male thing in this country. My wife's grandmother, a traditional Kashmiri brahmin, regularly took snuff as did many of her female friends.

From my reading of my mother's entire Georgette Heyer collection at a tender age, Nigel, I can confirm that both women and men took snuff in London's high society. People would have their own mix, and try each others', and it would have been quite a thing for a young lady to have a snuff mix made up for her by one of the beaus of the time (or am I getting confused with music tape mixes, a la Nick Hornby, in the '80's?)...

I could probably dig out an appropriate novel if you're really interested, although a quick google might give you the same information?!

Our Host's reasoning was that taking snuff is better than the dreaded after dinner ciggie, he said that snuff contains nicotine, inhaling sends it straight up through the nostril directly to the brain instead of going downwards into the lungs-- I am now going to look at the websites you've found!!
