So, how are your trees this year and what's on your wish list?

I''m not posting this year's tree as the shape is upsetting me daily. The car broke down last week and I had to get a tree as I was hosting Mum and Dad Christmas at the weekend. So I got a Homebase delivery and it is disappointing! Never again!!

Here is last year's cut from a local farm. This year's is decorated the same anyway.

Horatio won't even look at this year's!

As for the period properly wish list, it was really to have a shower and functioning bathroom but that isn't going to happen so I'm still having quick washes in my Aleppo bomb site themed bathroom.

Our Christmas tree is still in the garden. It's in an oak half barrel and comes in every year around the weekend before Christmas Day. It's fed, watered and rotated throughout the year and puts on about 6" of even growth all round each summer. Eventually it will be too big for our low ceilings but it will find a permanent place in the garden. Cost us around £20 three years ago and now saves us at least that each year. Good investment .

Have you considered doing that Joce? At least you will know exactly what you're getting and be very green in the process.

I've tried doing that, tree always goes along great guns, then usually keels over and dies around the start of November. Maybe this year's will survive.

I have acquired an abandoned kitten! Going by my attempt at trying to measure out fabric with the help of 'Keith' a tree is a no no this year

(He has climbed up the chimney, been in the tumble dryer and washing machine and even in the Aga i feel a tree might be a step (or climb) too far :shock:

Joce, your (previous year's) tree is beautiful (I wouldn't expect anything less :roll: ) and I'm sure this year's will be no different! Sorry to hear your bathroom transformation won't be finished in time though

We have yet to buy our tree - we kept last year's but like a twig's, ours didn't make it - that's a job for saturday when Pip is home. I, too have been busy and we now have a snug that is half F&B India Yellow (not sure that will be done in time either, lol!) We have been trying to replace our lovely glass decorations that sadly smashed when we had a Christmas tree fail (collapse) our first year here. They were a delicious deep purple that has been hard to find replacements for.......

Pics will follow at the weekend hopefully!

Wish list-wise, I'm hoping Santa brings a giant mirror for the 9' Art Nouveau style frame we are hanging in the snug :shock:

We're probably not bothering with a tree this year . . . Is that a sad admission?

We've only just got back from holiday, FF junior has deserted us for five months working the ski season in France and sister-in-law became a granny this year so that side of the family will be descending on the new-born in Kent - so a quieter than usual Christmas for us this year, which could well be a pleasant change (well you know what I mean).

We're busy with all the other decorations though, so not entirely bah humbug.

I'm planning a couple of weeks off work to work on the house and get ahead of planning. It's a pain returning home for the weekend and having a day not fit to do anything then doing everything on Sunday.

Christmas presents were sorted by the washing machine failing last weekend - door interlock failed again and spiked the ECU. New one might have a ribbon attached to it next week.

We had children in the office holding electric candles and singing songs in Swedish yesterday. It is a tradition stolen from the Italians called Lucia and happens on 13th December for some reason where the young ones bring light into the building in a time when it is dark and cold. I thought it was sweet.

I'm with you Phil on the commercial focussed thing we have in the UK.

Christmas trees in pre-victorian houses? I thought period authenticity was something many members were striving for :wink:

I must admit I used to love having a tree and lights, but temporary accomodation doesnt lend itself to Christmas decorations.

A friend of mine (who has forbidden me from posting photos :? ) has a lovely arrangement of lights, tinsel, holly, red berries, ivy, pine boughs and pillar candles on every available horizontal surface. It looks amazing, very christmassy, and very 'grown-up'. I have a feeling that if I ever manage to buy my house I'm going to nick the idea wholesale.

Lovely to read all your posts! :lol: though some of you need a few visits of Christmas past present and future ghosts from the sounds of things! :lol: though actually I totally get where you're coming from, it can all be a bit much!

Abi - I love that idea - grab a photo and don't tell her - I want to see! Though I can sort of imagine. I think I'll nick that idea for next year when I have a bigger amount of entertaining to do - this year is quiet and yes secretly very pleased about that as hosting one lot of parents after the other is exhausting!

Massively excited about my Christmas prezzie which is period style hair! It will sound odd perhaps but living in this house without having the good genetics for long, lustrous flowing locks has been a severe trial! :lol: Anyway I'm now the proud owner of the hair I always dreamed of and can turn off the central heating and start planning my Regency clothes and hairstyles!

Apologies for the personal photos but for the ladies, some of whom I think might be interested in this extraordinary leap in what may be achieved, a before and after of me and my hair!! It has been achieved by means of keratin bonds, ultrasonic vibration and a large quantity of human hair. It is comfy, light as a feather, warm and oh so glamorous! When you see the older celebs on TV they typically have this, not real hair!

I usually have something for the house but this year I just needed this! And it is actually very Georgian - they lived a bit of fakery.

Ooh thank you so much for sharing that idea tobydog - it's something I used to do long ago but stopped when the tree died in a summer drought! But if I had watered it that wouldn't have happened! Will have a look for a little pot grown one I can nurture. Thanks!
