Period Christmas

Christmas is coming and our geese are getting fat!

We have the whole tribe descending this Yule, and we've promised them a period-themed feast. We're thinking Victorian recipes.

We have a goose.

Can anyone suggest other period recipes for us to put on over the festive period?

Baked ham (studded with cloves, of course!) and peas pudding. Bit North-Eastern, but very nice.

What about that dish where various birds are stuffed into larger birds? I can't remember the name, but I recall that River Cottage chappie creating one a few years ago. Something like a large turkey stuffed with a goose then duck, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon, woodcock, snipe, quail etc.

And then bake a game pie or two with the leftover trimmings.

I upset Mr Juju cos I said we didn't have room for a Christmas tree with all our visitors coming this Christmas. Our living room is too small for assorted relatives and a luxurious tree. Anyway, we've compromised on trying to find a small skinny tree. I like the idea of doing a 'period Christmas' - I wonder what a 17th century Christmas would have been like ie when our house was first built? I suppose nothing special as the Victorians sort of invented all the frivolty. Actually I remember a thread on this some time ago - must have been a while as I remember Evelyn contributing to it!

Making petit fours with the children has always been a Christmas tradition in our family.

Also, this year we will be trying our first attempts at homemade 'Blackcurrant vodka' and 'Redcurrant gin'

cant wait to get my erection fully erect in the living room this year , my balls are just itching to get out and hung up for display. i love crimbo , i love the yearly erection in the living room , i love getting my balls out for display at Christmas , i love getting drunk and telling people how proud i am of my erection and how much my lovely balls mean to me at this time of year.
it doesnt seem all that long ago when we all discussed our erections last year.

Your daughter is a bit younger than my youngest - but how old will she be at Christmas? 8 months or so?

I guess she's not mobile yet - once they're mobile, be it crawling, bum-shuffling or rolling, all babies seem to like finding little bits of stuff from off the floor and putting them in their mouths. Pine needles would be a huge attraction for this, it would be a nightmare trying to stop her eating them.

My son's main ambition in life at the moment seems to be to eat either the TV remote control or my laces. Honestly - if I stand still for more than a few seconds, I've got a 9 month old baby on top of my feet, trying to undo and eat the laces from my boots.

ooops i never thought about the bits, good point. shes just rolling at the moment but we do try to keep her off the floor and in her play area with a room divider to keep her out of trouble, might have to have a rethink on this one.

You could have an authentic Cromwellian Christmas. Very, very cheap. And not much fun.

Real trees, even in a stand, are never that stable either - and at that age she may well be reaching up to grab things to try to stand up. An artifical tree doesn't drop anything, are usually more stable in their stands and they are a lot lighter. Even if she does pull it over she's much less likely to do herself an injury.

I do hate artificial Christmas trees though.

might put a large fire guard/room divider type affair around the tree , i dont like artificial trees either , they dont smell right.
