Patio Surfacing - Rock dust/gravel

Hi all.

I'm intending to surface a patio area. As money for stone flags has run out, I'm thinking of the buff, compacted surface used for example at Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland. This looks to be rock dust/fines with small rock fragments, but I am struggling on the terminology.

Any one know the sort of thing I am thinking of? It would help with my builders yard if I can out least give them a recognised term.

20mm to dust or 40mm to dust depending on the largest particle size/ size of the hole in the screening mesh.

20mm- dust in a nice blue green sandstone £12 a ton self pickup. use a wacker plate and it compacts nicely

hogin from memory is a stone sand and clay mix may have crushed brick - varies regionly, another one to look out for is MOT
this is a name given to a base used for roads most of these will be a composite of localy available materials costs a lot to transport

GRANULAR SUB-BASE (GSB) and 6F2 is a graded granular material, usually a "hard rock".
There are 2 types of GRANULAR SUB-BASE:- GSB Type 1 and GSB Type 2. GSB Type 1 has a "tight"
grading envelope allowing much less fines and encouraging a "well graded" material. All stone is graded to
between approx 6cm – Dust
3” Clean allows for larger stone upto 3 inches, without the fines (dust). 3” Clean adds Strength to underlying
weaker subgrade, protecting it from wet weather. It provides a stronger platform for sub-base.
6F2 is a mixture of both GSB Type 1 and 3” Clean. An example of its use is for laying under porta-cabins.

I dont know if people know but we are all aware of the Salvoweb site but there is a Salvomie which deals with recycled aggregates etc.

TYPE 1 TYPE 2 6F3 and 6F2 are the modern common terms used on the Motorways etc

I find that the term hoggin comes from the north of England - blokes from Cumbria tend to use that a lot

I found it was used a lot in Yorkshire. It's strange how regional some building terms have stayed - like Gobbo for example, which is a Northern term for mortar. I used that term on a job in London and got looked at like I came from another planet.
