Patio ground

Hopefully this will be obvious to everyone else, any idea what kind of material this is? It doesn't look like the cement that was covering the other side of the external ground. That side has timber floors. This side of the house has old limecrete floor covered with tiles on the inside and this material on the outside. I am in the process of lowering the external ground level and this material is 1 brick level above the DPC.

Looks like clinker to me. Burnt residue from a furnace, steam train or coal fired power station?

Is there a reason to not remove it in this case?

If you've got damp inside then you do want to remove it to ideally 6 inches below your DPC. And be very happy because it ought to be a lot easier to break up than conventional concrete.
