We are buying a period semi detached and have just discovered that noise heard through the neighbouring party wall is unusually loud. We need to find a solution to this problem before committing financially. Does anyone have any advice on whether it is possible to insulate walls so the sound is significantly reduced? Grateful for any information.

Here is just one of many systems on the market http://www.soundreduction.co.uk/15.html but they are all basically doing same thing which is to isolate the existing party wall from an new inner wall and therefore reducing the transmission of noise vibration. This will alter the character of a period house especially where cornices are concerned and may give rise to issues of beathability of the stucture

But good advice though!
Can you be sure that the wall is the primary source of the noise? Might also be worth 'exploring the flooring' since if there is suspended floor and both sides have boards instead of carpets, the noise could also be travelling under the floor.
That said, most semis will enable you to hear your neighbours at some point.

It could be that the floor joists are built into the party wall, which would allow sound to transmit. It could also be the roof void. Check to make sure there is a wall and that it extends up to the slope and is sealed.
Otherwise you are into one of the many sound systems. These can be effective but all them will cost space, money, lost features & finishes and a fair bit of hassle.
If you see an advert for a magic wallpaper that costs 5 bob a roll, takes 5 minutes to fit and will cut out all noise. Give it a miss.
