Parkray flue

We are installing a secondhand parkray and a competent friend is doing the plumbing for us, thank goodness! However I have a query that I hope someone can answer... at the top of the parkray is a short metal flue about 10 inches long...does this have to be fire clayed onto the body of the parkray...also do we have to have a metal screen going across the inside of the chimney with a cut out for the short flue to go into, I imagine we have to .... (the parkray is a solid fuel type...)
Any one out there in the ether....?

I can't be precise about your Parkray, but I can tell you that the flue that emerges from the top of our woodburner is cemented into the body of it with some sort of compound. I don't think it's traditional fireclay, though. It feels more like some sort of modern flexible mastic - must be highly heat-resistant, though!

As regards your chimney, I think you'll probably need a steel "register plate" (as they're called) for the flue to connect to. However, I recommend that you should check up on modern building regulations for this kind of installation - they may require you to install an insulated flue right up to the top of the the chimney. This can be done in two ways:-

1. Your short flue goes up into the register plate, above which it connects to a single skin stainless steel flue up to the top of the chimney. The space around this flue is filled with fireproof insulation material, such as mica granules.

2. You don't have a register plate. Your short flue connects to a double-skin stainless steel flue (with built-in insulation) up to the top of the chimney.

However, as I said, do check up on the regulations. The above would apply for a woodburner - I'm not sure whether a Parkray is treated the same way.

The pipe used to be connected to the top of the Parkray by fire cement often in the form of an asbestos rope.

You should be aware that the Parkray flue gets very hot and many chimney liners cannot stand the resultant heat, melt/disintegrate and fail.
The way the Parkray temperature control operates always ensures high flue temperatures. Much hotter than most other fires.
