Painting Thoughts

Hi All,

We're doing a spot of impromptu redecorating and high on the hit list is the previous owners pink!
However - amongst ourselves, we can't agree what to do about the panelling. Do we go for one colour across all the walls, or do we pick out the panels as they are today, or just the panel edging. What're folks thoughts?

:lol: Or a Marshmallow I think? ..there are a few decorating decisions made by the previous owners actually, that can only be described as.. er.. "Special".

My aunt has a very similar ceiling/decoration, from what I remember it is all one colour on the ceiling (white I think) and then the walls are all a pale pastel shade with the wall panels picked out in white. Looks rather nice and not too overpowering. (Not a brilliant white though I hasten to add!)

What a lovely wall. Not sure I'd have gone for pink, but I have friends who would!

I'd be inclined to use a pastel shade and white, one for panels and t'other for the rest. It's very much individual artistic preference, though: I'm not the sort to go for black, or black and red...

I would choose a shade of white for the ceiling. For the sake of argument it is a greenish white. Then I would have a slightly greenier shade of the same thing for the walls and a slightly more green shade of the same thing for the panels perhgaps with an even greener shade for the panel borders. Green is not essential any colour of your choice would be fine, but having a suite of linked colours means that they will have some definition but will not fight with each other and your furniture

Linked colours or carefully graded shades of the same colour is an excellent idea. I would also add that you might find a chalky finish very effective. Francesca's chalky emulsions are lovely and many of her shades are graded 1,2,3. Rose of Jericho does an excellent distemper in a good range of colours, and The paint Library gives good graded shades . Chalky or distemper finishes are very light reflective and change in depth as the daylight shifts around the room. I always use Rose of Jericho's Chalk White when white is needed as it is a soft greyish white and merges well with all colours. They are also very helpful on the phone if you want help with blending shades together.

Francesca's Chalky Emulsions? Another paint option to consider then. My wife has found a Little Greene colour she likes, but I've heard mixed reports of the LG paints. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount to choose between Francesca, F&B and LG in terms of cost. For internal walls - is it all much of a muchness as to which to go with?

If I recall correctly, the main issue with Little Greene was the performance of the exterior gloss/eggshell.it did not seem to cope with the excesses of rainwater and peeled off.

With regard to the performance of all three emulsion finishes for interiors, there is not a lot of difference ----it is simply a matter of understanding how the colour is mixed, how dense , flat or light reflective it is. Some emulsions are easier to wipe clean than others. Have a look at the technical data on their websites.

Personally, I have never had any problems with Francesca, Rose of Jericho or Paint Library.

Hmmm. I don't really do painted walls, so Inside the panels I'd be looking to wallpaper. Outside, a paint that picks up one of the wallpaper colours.

I may not have been entirely sober when taking the photos, so the quality may not be the best, but hopefully give you an idea of what I was banging on about.

We're done!

What we naively thought would be a weekends job actually spread over three in the end, but there is finally no more pink to be seen!
The room briefly looked like an office out of the 80's..

..before we bit the bullet and went for a uniform paint across the walls. In the end, we're pleased with the result and I think is a lot less controversial than before!
