Painting old crittall windows and frames.

Good morning everyone.
I am repainting our old crittall windows and frames.
1. Do I need to remove all the paint from the wooden frames first ?
2. What about the putty on the outside of the crittall widows ? Do I try and leave that be ?
Any help on technique is very welcome.

I think the belts and braces approach is to scrape all the layers of old crap off, give it a sand and then repaint. Otherwise the performance of whatever paint you decide to use (and for whatever reasons) will be at least partially subject to the performance of the underlying layers.

Sry I'm not the best to ask on the putty, hopefully somebody else can step in to discuss that aspect of it.

Oooh, they look just like mine, except that mine are 6 pane not 4. Yours are in much better condition! I was waiting for good weather and then planning to scrape, sand and repaint and aockenden suggested. I have to get the old putty off too as it's in dreadful condition, cracked, chunks fallen out etc. Mine are fairly easy to lift off their hinges, which saves having to do the whole job off a ladder!

Luckily, I’ve set up some scaffolding to work from.
It’s going well. I’ve got all the paint off the woodwork and starting to get it off the critter windows. I think I’m gonna leave the potty if I possibly can.
