Hiya,
The front wall of the farmhouse has been cement rendered at various stages of its life with all the normal problems of cracking, retaining moisture in wall etc.
It is not practical to remove the render as it is too strongly bonded to the brickwork and will cause too much damage on removal.
We have been able to remove the cement render "plinth" covering the stepped foundation as this was soooo wet it was falling of, and have also removed cement render where it is cracked badly (e.g. around the plastic windows frames where it was hiding a 1" gap between the window frame and where the wall aperture had been enlarged to allow a modern uPVC window to fit! )
These areas will be re-rendered in lime, but will inevitably cause a bit of a patchwork quilt effect! The cement render has been painted with what looks like a white exterior masonry paint which seems pretty much stuck on.
So the question is, how to paint the wall to cover my repairs with a breathable paint that will adhere to the old masonry paint as well........
Have seen silicate masonry paints from earthborn/Ty Mawr etc but it is not clear if these will "take" to the existing covering and they are crazy expensive so I don't feel like experimenting! Also read on the forum about limewash with a bit of linseed as an alternative.
Any ideas/experiences/suggestions that might help?
Cheers,
Paul.
