Painting eggshell over gloss

Hello everyone
Very busy renovating our little Welsh farmhouse and need some advice.The ledge and brace doors have been painted in very bright 'Smurf'' blue gloss paint, not quite to my taste! Can I paint over the doors with maybe an eggshell finish? ( I don't like the shiny gloss look) will I need to strip the doors first or is there a primer I can use?

So long as you sand them to give them a key it shoudl be ok if the paint is in resonable condition. Not sure what the best satin paint is though. I've tried Little Green and Dulux ultimate opaque and neither are satisfactory (neither have lested very well, and the Dulux takes forever to dry). I know linseed paint is supposed to be good but also takes ages to dry and i think its benefit is reduced if used over old paint.

If trying that, I would sand them severely and possibly expect to use two coats if that blue is so bright. In fact I always try two coats of topcoat as I rarely find that one coat gives a good coverage, even for so-called one coat paints, and two quick coats take as long as a single good coat.

"Smurf Blue"? Says it all really!

The ''smurf blue' goes with the blood red painted floorboards,tangerine orange staircase & the canary yellow kitchen! :shock:
I think someone must have accidentally sneezed on an artists palette :lol:
Painting aside the house is beautiful,built from granite blown from the Gold mine & steeped in history

Nice to have an interior which is not white or beige. In our previous house we did the skirting and picture rails and door frames of the kitchen yellow, the dining room green, the sitting room red, one bedroom pink, the hall & stairs & landing dusky red, the library a lighter green. All doors were cream to give a unifying element.

Anyway yes sand down thoroughly. Dulux have a special primer for difficult surfaces

but I think just a good going over with sugar soap and a thorough rub down and you're good to go.

Satin/eggshell is not as durable as gloss nor as easy to keep clean, but it is more 'period',

If you suspect the Smurf paint is an oil based gloss you will either need to use an oil based eggshell or strip the doors. You can use oil based top coat on a water based undercover but not water based top coat on an oil based undercoat.

Thank you for all your tips and answers I'm sure the smurf blue is oil based gloss. The doors are in excellent condition I just wish I liked the blue it would save a lot of faff.
