Painting cast iron rainwater goods

Having been won over to the benefits of linseed oil paint on replacement timber windows, my thoughts now turn to the cast iron rainwater goods. These need overhauling, repair, reinstatement, etc...and finally repainting.

My question is: should I be using a similar linseed oil paint system on the cast iron gutters and pipes?

I've always used a hard setting bituminous paint. There is a BS (or whatever it's called nowadays) number for it which I can't find at the moment. It's the same as we used on oil storage tanks when they were made of metal.

The colour range used to be limited, green and black but all my gutters are black anyway...

I should have mentioned: I'm keen to match the original colour, which also matches the timber windows and fascia boards: chocolate brown.

Hammerite seems to have served mine fairly well. Again, not a great colour range but mine were to be black so good for that! Old paint came off brilliantly with a flap sanding disk on a 4.5" anglegrinder. Wire brush on a drill for the concave gutters.

You don't ever want to be doing this again, do you...
So, derust with Jenolite.
Then a zinc-rich primer of your choice
Then this epoxy-mastic paint

Then whatever colour you like over the top. Ask the suppliers about compatibility.

So, I've ordered Jelonite and the expoxy-mastic paint. Any recommendations for primers? I suspect I'll be finishing off with the linseed oil paint used for the windows.
