paint , lime wash , distemper or what?

i got a sample pot of distemper and had a wee go with it but the end product turned out dusty when rubbed with my fingers , i need to be painting a kitchen and bathroom soon , the distemper i used was for internal use so i am not sure if an external distemper might be better.
can anyone recommend a paint that will be washable , breathable and none dusty when rubbed?
i am on dial up so searching the forum is a proper pain so my apologies if this is one of those questions that has been flogged to death already.

I used caesin distemper from rose of jericho.
Not dusty at all, but if you rub it hard or for a while it does come off, but I can't see me or anyone else doing that in the normal way of life.
It isn't what I'd call washable, it comes off if it gets to wet when rubbed. I just paint over it, we have a section of wall where the dogs continually brush against and you can't tell that it has been repainted over.
It's breathable.

Phone them, they are very good at answering questions.

Not looked at their website before - very nice products. Interestingly, with trying to deside on product to finish our bedroom walls, we wwere at Attingham Park (N.T. Ironbridge way) - and they are restoring a part of the house in original painted and built up wallpaper, and stripping back the vinyl 'institution paint' and repainting in distemper - think they were quite surprised that I even knew what it was! Looking really good though, and nice to see it 'in action'.

I too use the casein distemper from Rose of Jericho. You might like to consider their vinyl paint--- I've had to use it our bathroom, it's wipeable.

thanks guys , ive just had another wee rub and this time my hand remained clean , it must have still been damp the last time i rubbed it.
do you think distemper is a good idea in a kitchen and bathroom? would distemper designed for external use be better perhaps?
i am also worried that when you use distemper you cannot paint over it with anything other than distemper so once on there is no turning back.
perhaps a clay paint would be better?

I've used the caesin distemper in kitchen, working fine, bedroom and ensuite - not moved into these rooms yet, in fact still painting bedroom today !
I suspect we'll use it in the bathroom when we get round to working on it
