I am looking at paint for when we have finished plastering in lime plaster. I have found Earthborn clay paint which looks good but wonder if anyone has used this paint or can recommend anything else. thanks
I've used earthborne clay paint. I liked it, but it is very very thick. No smell, nice finish, good colour, I would just thin it a little as it makes it easier to apply.
I quite like Claypaint, though it takes a little getting used to. Thinning the first coat definitely helps, it's quite thick and I found it a challenge to maintain a wet edge using it unthinned. A big brush size and a bit of urgency does help though. I wonder if dampening the surface slightly might reduce the suction a bit...?
Having said that, it dries nicely and seems quite hard-wearing. We used it on an old lime plastered ceiling we peeled the emulsion off and it faired it up quite nicely.
Used Earthborn clay paint four years ago on a newly lime-plastered wall.
Only had time for one coat.
Good opacity, well as has been said it's jolly thick.
No sign of it coming off.
Also used Earthborn - and I'm a big fan. In one room applied over the mix of new lath and lime plaster, very old limewashed lath and plaster, chipboard covered in lining paper, emulsion covered gypsum, emulsion covered lime, hemp lime plaster over brick and a bit of plasterboard - it covered everything and all has the same texture now, you need to tap things to figure out what's what.
Two years on and it still looks great.
I also used what was left over to coat the one plinth wall that's still covered in cement render (it was sound and internal) as a key for limewash to match the rest of the plinth walls that are hemp lime rendered - it worked perfectly, no dusting or flaking of the limewash
very interested in claypaint I'm presuming I can paint straight over limewash? I'd need to use their primer to get rid of water staining but I am presuming it would adhere well to limewash, I am a bit nervous of limewashing over because it's such thin consistency and goes all over the place and I think this claypaint would be a lot easier to deal with myself.
Another Earthborn clay paint household here. Replaced badly applied (dusty) limewash with clay paint and very happy with it.
If your limewash is well adhered you should be fine to paint over. If not, I would recommend removing any loose limewash and then using the Earthborn sealer as a first coat.
Would echo the comments about thinning clay paint with a little water to make application easier (as it is very thick).
Nothing wrong with lime wash in my opinion. If I done my walls again, I would either lime wash , or at least do the first 2 coats in lime wash, as it gives a much smoother finish on new lime plaster.
