paint colours for windows and conservatory

I am looking for a traditional period colour for windows and conservatory for our period thatched property - can anyone suggest a soft old looking greeny/blue/grey (sort of lichen coloured) to give that weathered look?

Just what period? pre-1700: probably bare wood; 18th century: mostly white (but not brilliant white); from 1820ish: dark colours especially dark green became more popular with more rich colours introduced through 19th century; mid 20th century, especially post world war II: white, including brilliant white; late 20th century: a number of 'heritage' colours that, yes, look rather like lichens, but actually attempt to recreate the colours of limewashes and distempers used on internal walls but not on external joinery in former times. What period does your conservatory date from? Paint colour is a relatively temporary thing and there is an argument for not trying to copy what there was in some conjectured former period unless the building is serving a specific museum function. It may be most appropriate to paint it in what you think looks best, having regard to the fashions of the early 21st century and making your contribution towards setting those fashions.

Oh, and here's me thinking you were coming over all philosophical!

It's your fault too that several people haven't been working too hard today, me included, but voting for our favourite buildings on the Icons site. I'd tried to avoid it so far, but I've now nominated Gateshead 'Get Carter' car park ( Owen Luder) and sent a comment re Paddington Station and the proposed demo of Span Four...
