Hi all being new l thought l would let you see our project in Argyll. We moved in in April 2013 with the first job being the reroofing of the house and coach house. we have also renovated the sash windows downstairs, as pvc double glazing was put in upstairs a few years back. Other jobs completed (or part completed) are installation of a multi fuel stove, installation of two en-suits, a lot of painting and decorating
The previous owner was a diy disaster and l am also taking out all the work he has done which includes some dogy wiring, ie socket under the bath, socket wired in 1.5mm T&E and wall lights running of sockets. I have also found plastic water pipe that has no inserts in the joints, so l have been replacing this as l go along

The two photos are the house when we bought it and circa 1900, it was built in 1842 and the church burnt down in the 1980's

That looks lovely. I was brought up in a house with a lot of similar features (apart from the arched upper windows) in Dundee, built in 1907. The stone and bay windows must have been in fashion for a very long period as most of the cities in Scotland look like that. The window in the middle has a modern looking aspect ratio, but I see it in the old photo too. What room is behind and why is it odd looking?

Previous owners and wiring are fun. Over here the previous owner that didn't have any matching screws was also bad at screwing wires in tightly or in the right order. You would think Part P would sort that out these days but ironically with building regs knocking around here I just replaced the bathroom fan like for like yesterday (but with the wires in the right order this time so it actually worked) but didn't sort out the mess. (I'm in a grump with legislation and building regs at the moment.)

A lovely house and a beautiful setting and sounds like you're storming ahead! Hope you can put the frilly barge boards back. I've a friend who made some for his house, he said once you got them on the ground they were huge! But well worth the effort.

we are in the position that 3 of the last 4 owners of the house still live in the village so we are building up a good story book of what happened. The church was a Free Church od Scotland that was decommissioned in the 1960's. Seems the church was bought by a builder who was going to develop but know one is sure what he was going to do. However he was working on the place one day and the place burst into flames a couple of hours after he left. :roll: He then went bankrupt. The land was bought by a local builder and two houses built on the site.

We haven't put the frilly barge boards back, we thought about this for a long time but sorry to say we put PVC up. The reason was due to the height and that painting at that high every four years was too much. Especially since the next time it will need done l will be 60 yeas old, didn't fancy that.

There is a box room behind that window dark and small, so we think it may have been the maids room, but it is between two of the main bedrooms so it confuses us. I suppose it could have been a dressing room.

We thought about changing it into en-suits but that would have meant a downpipe by the front door or in the hall so that got ruled out quickly. So it will be a study

That's a shame. Access looks good. You could have had it knocked up in timber for less than a grand. Linseed oil paint could have been applied before installation and it would need very little maintenance (likely outlasting your uPVC). I'm guessing its modern, non-breathable paint on timber that's peeling in your photo above? And its this that caused you to go for uPVC?

The decorative barge board helps brighten the rather austere stone frontage. You'd probably get more than your grand back in value added to the house by this lovely period feature.

(Disclaimer: I'm a highly biased, grumpy obsessive when it comes to uPVC....)

That's a shame. Access looks good. You could have had it knocked up in timber quite cheaply and used linseed oil paint. This would require very little maintenance and outlast your uPVC. I'm guessing its the old modern non-breathable paint that's peeling in your photo above?

You'd get more than your grand spent on the barge board back in the value added to the house with this lovely piece decoration.

Spent last summer working on the outside before the weather turned, it was a good move as it hasn't stopped raining since September. It was dry all day last Wednesday, so l think that is summer been and gone.
