Oscillating multitools - Cheapie at Aldi

Hello Everyone,

I keep banging on about how brilliant these tools are - especially for plunge cutting in-situ - if anyone is in doubt if they'd use one or not and wants to try a cheapie, Aldi have a corded one for £20 (just called "Multifunction tool") on offer from Thursday 18 Oct. Bear in mind their offers only last a few days. Comes with a few blades, and they've got separate blade sets at £6.

My multitool is also from Aldi. I think Aldi tools are great for the money and offer a 3 year warrenty which I have put to the test, funnily enough with a faulty multitool. I was plunge cutting roof laths and it stopped oscillating. Called the helpline and sent them an email with the copy of the purchase receipt (always keep the receipts) then a week later a brand new complete tool and accessories were delivered from Germany.

I can only assume my first one was a genuinely faulty item as I have been plunge cutting plenty of nails, with the new tool, with no problems since.

They are a great tool that cuts materials just like any other tool but they will do it in certain situations that no other tool would.

Like I said earlier Aldi tools are more than adequate for the DIYer, im currently restoring my house with mostly Aldi/Lidl gear. Dont get me wrong sometimes a quailty tool is required but more often than not, for non professional use, the prices new simply cant be justified.

Cheap tools can be good, no doubt about it, and that Aldi tool is great value and a good starting point or even permanent option if you're OK with corded.

I like cordless tools though but I got fed up with the batteries dying long before the tool did - so I bit the bullet and started slowly acquiring a collection of the Makita LXT 18v tools. Expensive to start with but once you've got the first purchase out of the way you can then buy "bare" tools with no charger or battery. My thinking was that Makita is such a popular trade brand and the LXT range is their core one, even if they move on to other technologies and stop making the batteries eventually the range will be supported by aftermarket battery manufacturers for many, many years to come.

I only own two branded tools:

A dewalt 18v drill/driver which is a beast of a machine - enough torque to tear your arm off if you forget to set the clutch and at 100 or so quid worth every penny. Two slimline batteries that don't last long (if you are spending a day "screwing", but can charge in less time than the other discharges)

And a Fein multimaster oscillating tool 350 QSL - the go to tool for any awkward job and the one that many trades have been jealous of to the point of getting their own even though they already had a dewalt or other oscillating tool. Fein invented the concept and had a patent on it which expired a few years ago, hence the proliferation of other makes - however the fein makes considerably less noise, less vibration and feels more solid than the competition

The rest are screwfix/aldi/lidl cheapies where my usage is in the once a month of less category. Although the aldi biscuit jointer , when used, more than pays back the thirty odd quid I spent on it. A biscuit jointer is like a multi tool - you never know you needed it until you had it, but there are some jobs that only a biscuit jointer can do

Following recommendations on here, bought a multitool a few weeks ago, although I have yet to try it. Our window fitter was using a Dewalt version.
Mine is a Ryobi, and like most of my tools, it came pre-loved via eBay. Thus I have acquired many of the Ryobi range plus four lithium batteries, and for outside work in particular I rarely use corded tools now. One does need multiple batteries plus the ability to charge them, as continuous use soon results in deflation. Yesterday I was using the drill to knot-brush some paint off an old beam and I must have swapped batteries ten times.

A member of a car forum I used to inhabit sometimes flagged up Lidl/Aldi tools. For DIYers I'm sure they make a lot of sense.

I've got an Energer brand one from Screwfix or Toolstation, I for get which as im in both quite often. It's perfect for what I need whilst renovating our house. It's helped me out a shed load of times and never missed a beat. Definitely a worth while tool to have.

Often Aldi/Lidl tools are just a rebranded version of something that elsewhere costs a lot more and minus the 3 year warranty. Couple of years ago bought a log splitter from Lidl cost £150 versus the exact same one in Screwfix at over £300. Cracking bit of kit splits tons of log each year with
no complaints, from me or the splitter.

+1: my 50L compressor from Aldi is a reasonable bit of kit and looks to be an exact copy of one in machinemart for double the price I paid.

Where do you people get new multi-tool blades from? (Fein/Bosch compatable). Thus far, it seems that Ebay is the cheapest place.

I believe I saw it on here somewhere, but I got a set of blades in a swish aluminium case from Saxton - https://www.saxtonblades.co.uk - and they have served me well. I seem to recollect that they are maybe not the cheapest, but in value for money terms others rate them highly.

I have found them to be more than satisfactory in the (minimal) work I have made them do thus far.
