oriental rugs

Hello. I've just bought what I think is a hand woven oriental rug on ebay. I've bought it as it was cheap and close, so it is a good first try for size and colour of a rug in my front room. If I end up chucking it or putting it back up for sale so be it. However if it is a good size and colour I may want to keep it. It has tassles which have become short in places. perhaps the owners dog chewed them off. Does anyone know a rug repair place that can make sure the damage won'tr creap past the knots, and knows morethan to cover in glue tape of other horrors? thanks

Speaking from a position of no actual experience, an extra knot or two applied in the right place with similar thread might protect the tassels. If the actual carpet's ragged you might find a local carpet shop helpful PP, if you still have any of the old-fashioned independent ones left. I've heard of people buying a carpet offcut and having the edges bound to make a rug, it's a bit like darning I think and probably done by wizzing it through a machine.

Good ebay rug experiment by the way, I've been thinking of doing the same thing though haven't got beyond the lurking stage yet!

These people, from whom we have bought several carpets for walls and floor, have a really good repairer on tap. I guess you could send them a photo, and then post the carpet.

I have also bought a couple of rugs via eBay, but it depends so much on the quality of photography. In terms of positioning the carpet in the room, you may know the colour changes significantly depending whether you look along the grain or against It?

The rug is attractive, but not a good colour for my front room. I think I will put it in another room and not worry with repair. Ironically a cheap ikea rug I have in my offfice/spare room and paid no attention to looks a pretty good size and colour for my front room. I'll probably just use that as I don't have a bottomless wallet.

We've also bought a few traditional/antique/vintage rugs on eBay - a couple by Liberty of London (rather cheaper than the new one we bought there in 2008 :shock: ) and a super cream/olive/burnt orange one that wasn't expensive but is a perfect foil for our oak Arts & Crafts furniture. We were all set to replace the latter with a better quality Persian rug last year - went as far as purchasing it - but it just wasn't *right* so we stuck it back on eBay and put the old, well-loved one back down :roll:

I was about to suggest http://www.therugstudio.co.uk, PP - we haven't actually purchased from them but visited their premises when they were based in Hitchin (now in Uppingham, Rutland) and were very impressed. Rachel carries out restoration/repairs to antique rugs as well as selling a variety of new and older pieces.

Pleased to hear you've found the perfect rug by (as our American friends would say) "shopping your home"!
