Clicking on a link to an external site, the site loads in the current window, but the URL displayed is still 'http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/...'. This prevents bookmarking the page or sending a link to others.

It could also be seen as misleading - seeing the URL is http://www.periodproperty could lead users to think the content belongs to periodproperty.

I'd prefer external links opened in a new window, displaying the URL relative to the page displayed.

If the page needs to open in the same window,the correct correct URL could be displayed anyway.

However, the lovely Firefox does not have that problem. Plus, it is much more user friendly and configurable than IE, in my opinion. Stephen Fry likes Firefox too, so it comes highly recommended.

It doesn't happen with all links using IE. It does, however, mean that clicking off loses the PPUK page, I agree that using the back arrow mostly gets you back, it's juat remembering all this!

Best thing is right click and open new window or new tab.

Oh yes, one more thing.

With Firefox, if you hold the Ctrl key down whilst clicking on the link, a new tab is opened for the link, in addition to the current tab (e.g. PPUK). You just then click between the tabs are desired.

Simplicity itself.

S'funny, Ian. My Firefox does have that "problem", just as Nemesis describes, with the "incorrect" url displayed. Even checking "open all links in a new tab" doesn't work for links from PPUK.

The solution for me is to control-click the link which opens a new tab with the correct url.

You can also choose a new tab or window with Firefox by right-clicking on the link.

Plus, it doesn't have the problem that ljn mentioned with the persisting PPUK URL. There are many other advantages over IE too, such as it not crashing every 5 minutes.

I'm not finding the PPUK link really, and my IE doesn't crash. It's very good indeed. IE7 I think.

We could trouble shoot this between us all night, and perhaps even sort out that quirky feature - perhaps I have a more recent version of Firefox? I think we'd bore ourselves and everyone else to death with it though.

Well once I realised the clicking off lost PPUK I started right click and new window, but it also makes a new tab, if that's what you choose, and pressing
CTRL

when clicking on a link also opens a tab - which of course then has to be opened .

It's a web problem though not a software one I think. Clicking staright on a link used to open a new wondow, and if you clicked the little cross you went back to the page you clicked from.

Now it doesn't.

But clicking the link mostly gets the new URL not PPUK.

Oh aye, and [SHIFT KEY] plus clicking on the link opens a new browser window.

Right - does that in IE also, and you can then click off using the little X in the corner, and it returns you to PPUK.

But it was far more simple before!

And using Firefox solves the URL problem that ljn reported having.

I cannot see what is so difficult about holding the shift key down whilst clicking on the link.

It's just more faff, it's as simple to right click. I tend to use the mouse not keyboard as far as poss.

But the URL prob isn't widespread either, with IE, been trying it out.

It was just a bit more simple before.

I'm sure ljn will be far better off with Firefox.
