I recently bought a grade ii house built in 1827 and it has an open fireplace in the living room with a dog grate. The back of the fire has exposed bricks which have been badly filled with cement and it looks messy. What is the best way of making this look better. I do not want to fit a register grate but was wondering if the bricks should be painted or rendered or if there are any cast iron backs and sides that would fit.
I also recently removed many layers of woodchip from the hallway leaving a mixture of lime and newish plaster. It has also blown in places and the plaster is attached direct to the brickwork. Do I need lime plaster to replace the blown parts and can the rest just be skimmed with normal plaster or should lime be used throughout. I live in Norwich and have been unable to find anyone wanting to do the work - does anyone know of anyone who in the area who could help?
Many thanks
