OPC Colour

I was in Jewson today and they had a sign up stating that the colour of cement will be changing soon.
I didn't read the small print (and wish I had now) but one of the chaps there said it was something to do with power station ash being less available with the advent of greener power generation. I thought fly ash was added to concrete mixes, not the OPC itself.

Has anyone else heard about this?

not sure but i bought some cement a while back and it turned out to be dark grey when it dried.

I did suggest they use lime but they said they only wanted the hard stuff, then they started twisting my nipples and giving me Chinese burns to make me comply.

( The mind boggles as to what treatment is needed to convert you to upvc DG :wink:

It has been added directly to OPC in the past I believe..

It's also used as a cheap fill material in some Civil Engineering works, generally if they're near a power station - I worked on one such job years ago, it was used to make embankments to carry a new dual carriageway. Absolutely filthy stuff to be anywhere near - it blows around horrendously, gets in your eyes and stings like hell. Not nice at all, and not helpful when you're on the business end of a theodolite!

But I do agree with you - it's horrible stuff. I once spent a day demonstrating a large loading shovel to the NCB on a mountainous fly ash tip.

Yep - the "chain lad". Normally young with zero qualifications, the term comes from the days when engineers measured distances using chains - the chain lad being the one holding the other end of the chain.

Now they stand there with a levelling staff or with a prism target on a pole - or of course the other end of the tape measure! Theodolite's aren't used much any more, it's mostly "total stations" - which are essentially theodolites with distance measurement capability.

Groan! Given your love of pedantry, I should point out that the correct term is PFA - Pulverised Fuel Ash (or is it Pulverized? Looks a bit American with a z !)
