I see that one of my favourite period B&Bs - The Old Vicarage in Priors Marston - has just been sold as the owners are retiring.

Well if anyone is interested, the vendors are having an "Estate Sale" of the contents this weekend. See http://www.theoldvicarage.com/ for more details:

"After more than a quarter of a century at The Old Vicarage, David and Judith Adams are retiring and downsizing. On Saturday 22 October and Sunday 23 October there will be an estate sale on the premises... Estate sales are popular in America as an alternative to auctions. ... Sequence numbers will be assigned Saturday morning from 9am as buyers arrive. Entrance at 9:30 will be by small groups according to sequence numbers. First come, first served. Each item is priced and can be taken to the till for purchase. Cash, credit or debit cards only. At 3pm prices on all remaining items will be reduced by 25%. On Sunday morning all marked prices will be reduced by 35% and at 3 pm by 50%. All sales final. All goods must be paid for and removed by the end of the sale."

Unfortunately I'm still in Tokyo, so cannot make it, and SWMBO (who's living at the "Clun Farm") thinks we don't need to be filling the place with period details just yet

At £1.3m for the house, I rather suspect even the contents are out of my league! Looks very nice though.

Welcome, by the way. Clun is much more my sort of place than Tokyo - a ice cream from the florists by the bridge followed by a leisurely walk up to the castle was my last visit there on a beautiful April day this year. Clun is very nice, very secluded and very peaceful - Tokyo has it's appeal but it's certainly none of those!

Hell of a commute though - what time do you get up each morning????

Tokyo is indeed an interesting place. Been based here full time since 2002; persuaded my (now) wife to give up work in the UK and join me in 2005; but now in the process of repatriating back to the UK. Tokyo's been a fascinating place to live and work. Enabled me to experience living in a truly minimalist modern concrete and glass home for the last five years - which has been interesting - and take some great trips but now looking forward to being back and some dramatic changes.

Clun is very nice, very secluded and very peaceful - Tokyo has it's appeal but it's certainly none of those! Hell of a commute though - what time do you get up each morning????

About 10pm for you (at the moment) which is 6am for me...

Our new home is actually even more secluded and peaceful than Clun - further up the valley in the tiny parish of Bettws-y-Crwyn (which despite the name is still on the English side of the border - at least today - though is West of Offa's earthwork). Work means that I'll be commuting most weeks into London and only up there on weekends for the time being. Certainly we have gone from one extreme (downtown Tokyo) to another (farmhouse in a very rural spot)...

Still doing research on the house, which has had some major changes made by the former occupants. We believe it was there in 1816, as it appears on the original sketches for the Bishops Castle OS map and judging by a few of the remaining features it was probably built sometime in the latter part of the 18th century.

I have an even more pressing (boom-boom!) engagement this weekend with two Rugby World Cup matches on TV.

Wonderful interesting house. We used to live very close by, in daikan- yama, just off hachiman dori! Ours was a rather more ordinary looking place though. We just booked a trip back to Tokyo for the beginning of December, quite a while since I have been back so lots of new things to check out.

Small world!

It is an interesting house - lots of light and feeling of plenty of space which is nice - particularly compared to many in Tokyo. I love the way it feels light, airy and private while still being in very close proximity to neighbours. It does, however, have some downsides in that it's not very energy efficient (high bills both summer and winter) and not entirely practical with unsealed limestone floors and white plaster walls with no architraves which chip when touched. Still has been a great experience to live there for the last five years. Would certainly be useful background if I were to ever attempt a "Grand Design".

Yes, spookily so at times. One of my best friends who I got to know at our current expat location has a house in London not ten minutes walk from our small apartment. AND her and her husband had lived in Aoyama in Tokyo before moving here ( not that we ever met them there ).

Our family home is in Bath, and one of our neighbours employs the daughter of someone I had met here in Singapore. It took a while before we both realised.

I think there must be some truth to the whole six degrees of separation thing :lol:
