Can anyone tell me the history of the old custom of placing an unusual coin in an inaccessable place when building or extending a house.
We have just renovted our porch. Hidden in a crevice of a beam we found a George third bank token three shilling coin dated 1811.Our co told us of the above custom, but he did not know its history ( wealth health happiness etc).
I am framing this coin and hanging it in the porch and replacing a freshly minted one back on the beam.Is this correct or should I replace the original one.
The house was built in the late 16th century so the coin was not placed there when it was built.
Finally can anyone think of an unusual present day coin to put back.
I hope someone is a historian and can enlighten me .Thanks Pat.
