No, we don't exactly do slopes in my part of Lincolnshire, but that's a great website you've created. Well done.
The 'bank barns' of Cumbria are quite famous. Access on two levels, people go in one side and cows go in the other side but a story lower.

Your website was fascinating! What a beautiful house you have, with such interesting history.
We're built into a slope. You come down steps to the cottage, enter on ground level where most of the living rooms and bedrooms are, (there's one attic room) and then go downstairs into a partially sunk basement for the kitchens. (completely sunk on the east side, but with ground floor windows onto the garden on the west side). There is more shelter building it in this way than perching it on the crest of the hill, and the well fills up more easily too I'm sure. The waste disposal has been so built to flow down the hill away from the cottage, and the living rooms arranged to get the westerly sunset views over the valley. All in all a very sensible design.

I think we're on a slope. If I stand at the bottom of the garden, I instinctively feel that I'm perhaps 10-15 centimetres higher than the ground level by the house.

How strange, you have posted here before and we have all discussed your house.
Here in Hebden Bridge, not that far down the road, the whole town is built into the hillside - our (locally) famous double decker houses feature 4-6 storey terraces of two streets of houses stacked on top of each other - entry from the street at the foot of the hill to the 'underdwellings' which are built into the hillside, not usually having rear windows and entry to the 'overdwellings' from the street behind. Lots of fun I'm sure with flying free holds and scaffolding.

What about the pub in Robin Hoods Bay where you can go in off the street climb up the stairs to the other bar and step out into the street? Or was that just the beer?

We live down the road from TimM (in Luddenden). Our house is on a slope. The lower floor is below ground level at the front. At the rear the same floor is about 5-6 feet about ground level. But this is easily explained by the fact that the garden was originally the mill pond for the corn mill.

Indeed, in HB the valley floor was saved for the mills, housing relegated to the valley sides, and squashed in (try getting a house with a garden round here). But perhaps there's something in this efficient land use that's relevant - is it perhaps a way of providing a separate barn within a single structure? Although perhaps there is something in the industrial angle? But what?

Thanks Schoolmarm. I thought I was going doolally for a while - sure I'd read all about the house before but thought I must have imagined it. Glad to know that all that lime hasn't addled my brain.
