Old/Antique books on property and Interiors etc

Do any of you have any of these??
I am merely asking out of interest as Paul has bought me one for my birthday.
The English Interior - A Review of the Decoration of English Homes from Tudor Times to the XIXth Century by Arthur Stratton, Architect
Large folio heavy volume published in 1920 by B T Batsford. Contents include interiors of the Tudor and early Stuart periods, late Stuart interiors, Georgian interiors, principal features of the english interior consided in detail, wall treatement, decoration in colour, ceiling of wood and plaster, fireplaces and chimney pieces, doors and doorways, staircase.

Does anyone have any recommendations? i need some new reading matter and am looking for something different to read ...cooorrr i must be getting old hahah :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :wink:

Its heavy, expensive and a little turgidly written but has a fabulous wealth of detail and illustrations. There is a companion volume on decoration technique and materials.

Of a more general nature, Mark Girouard's "Life in the English Country House" and "The Victorian Country House" are fascinating, and seemed quite ground-breaking at the time. I must have read them in the 1980s.

Thanks Nigel i just bought Mark Girouard's "Life in the English Country House" for the princely sum of £3.52 the architectural british interiors for £28.75 and the victorian country house 1st edition for £18 all on ebay!!
Looking forward to them arriving now and having a good read...I knew you would know some good reading material Nigel!

A must read. A Cartoon History of Architecture incorporates most of Lancaster's architectural books, so you get it all in one volume, except for Progress at Pelvis Bay and Draynefleet Revealed, which are also well worth a look.

I've just bought Girouard's Elizabethan Architecture but it's too heavy to pick up. Good on the grandest stuff, and interiors, a bit light if you're interested in smaller houses or live any real distance north or west.

Ilona - you might find Garry Miller Historic Houses of Lancashire: The Douglas Valley, 1300-1770 is of relevance as it covers the area immediately east (to within a mile) of where you are.

I need books to fill the library area anyway !!! once i have decided how i am going to decorate it anyway, and that could be 5 years away the way i am going !

A warning, Ilona:

Books multiply.

So calculate how much shelving you need, and multiply it by at least three.


Twelve years ago we decided that the long narrow room over our hall would be a good place to store our books (and conceal the boiler), so we had both walls lined with shelves and cupboards from floor to ceiling. Empty shelves were used for tasteful displays of interesting objects and we thought it looked very stylish. Today, however, every shelf is overflowing and (in spite of having half-a-dozen bookcases scattered around the rest of the house) we've had to make a vow that for every new book that comes in, one will go to the charity shop down the road.

Book lined walls add a good bit of insulation to the house, without the need to fight with authority .

hahaha luckily for me i have a library to fill... we did have quite a lot of books anyway still any excuse to spend cash on something that looks good on a shelf.. provides an interest and insulates too!! hehehe i can't fail!

Now i wish i hadn't taken a lot of our old books to the car boot sale last summer just before we moved in... It might not be so barren in there right now.. :lol: :lol:
