As I said in my intro thread, we didn't buy our house with dedicated conservation in mind. Although we'd like to do what we can, practicality and cost will be very big factors too. In addition, the old stone house has been roughly doubled in size with brand-new extensions which still need a bit of finishing, and so different techniques and approaches will apply as that part isn't a restoration project. You all seem like very nice and very knowledgable people, but I don't want to break any rules or fill up the board with non-period posts (this evening for example I am trying to research the best way to lay a cork tile floor over concrete). Can anyone recommend a good DIY site I could use for 'modern' building type questions? Thank you!

I would be surprised if you manage to get any further off topic than most people on here! So be prepared that when you ask your cork tile queries, the answer may include advice on how to worm your chickens!

As for other forums, diynot can be interesting, if you are able to keep a healthy dose of scepticism and cross-check anything suggested.

A number of the regulars on here also appear from time to time on the green building forum, a site which often seems up for an argument over heritage versus environment!

No need to go off to other sites, it's simply a matter of naming the thread "Period xxxxx", doing that marks it as not being about lime plaster, oak beams, dry rot, woodworm, or whatever else you might expect to find being discussed on a Period Property forum.

Is that the rule Gareth? I just thought it was a joke! Hence Period Motorbikes, Period Solar Power, and even Period Periods have cropped up...

I find it is usually quicker when interested in answers on, say, lime render, to post a question on chicken worming. We tend to drift to lime quicker than vice versa!

I would avoid the screwfix forum. I've seen some poor advice on there before. More so than other sites.

I usually refer to DIYnot or UltimateHandyman. Both are good for DIY knowledge.

Apart from a good number of professionals on diynot showing a lamentable lack of good advice or knowledge on the use of lime and breathability! It's always how they "would do it with something modern as it's much easier."

Oh I agree. But I wouldn't go there for period property advice, when there's a perfectly good forum here for such things.

There are non-period property issues that you need to look up as well when it comes to DIY.

Diynot.com can be usefull however there is a lot of seriousley bad advice towards period property owners on there as well, personally I wouldnt bother.
