I had to install an oak post to support a projecting roof last year - Gave it a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil. It took a while to dry and harden. The oil didn't darken the wood or hide the grain.
You'll want Liberon liquid beeswax, doesn't darken the wood too much. I've no connection to the company but I used this on my beams after kling stripping and was very pleased with the result and I thought it smelt lovely but that could just have been the effect of the fumes . Incidentally I did patch test linseed oil and it really darkened the wood which was not the aesthetic I wanted.
