You might pay £30 per cubic foot for 1inch thick sawn boards boards but expect some wastage.

Rob - I don't know whether you already have a source of oak boards, but when we lived in south Suffolk I usually went to Shrublands Sawmills, near Ipswich. Give them a call with details of your requirements and they'll quote for cutting it for you.
I guess your barge boards will be quite wide, so try to ensure that you get well seasoned timber. Green boards are likely to cup and/or warp.

Yes, but maybe that's not so important with barge boards so long as they are installed with movement in mind. Even ever so seasoned boards are going to cup when the rain blows on to one surface but they'll straighten out again on drying.
Green would be cheaper. Obviously, don't spend extra on kiln dried timber - you'll be hanging them out in the rain.

green oak it is then Biff , its looking to be a job for next spring so hopefully it will sit through a summer before it sees our wet winters , not sure if it really matters or not.
cracking isnt a problem so long as its not really bad but warping? surely it wont warp so much as to make it visibly distort out of shape?
also , how would i install them with movement in mind? i thought it was just a case of screwing or nailing them up?

If you buy the boards now and keep them in a stack separated by square section sticks and a rainproof cover they'll be good next year.
If the boards are screwed on one edge only they can shrink and expand without danger, but unless they are very wide that probably won't be necessary. Drill holes a bit too big so the screws are a loose fit perhaps. Remember you don't get as much move along the grain as across.
