Hi All PPUK thought you might be interested if you live in Dorset or surrounding area -
Friday 15th we are having a workshop looking at the processes involved when an Scheduled Ancient Monument needs urgent conservation work. What the problems are, who decides what is done and when etc. Lectures in the morning, guided tour of the closed area of the Castle in the afternoon.
Saturday 16th is a practical day. Lectures/tour in the morning followed by an afternoon working with lime mortar on the ruins of a mill. The project will continue in the spring and is set to run for a couple of years, so real conservation work. As you have a listed building this is probably the most useful course for you.
All the lecturers are professionals working in the conservation sector. They include Martin Papworth, National Trust Regional Archaeologist, Martin Roscoe. National Trust Building Surveyor and Philip Hughes, Building Surveyor.
The practical course is run by Rob Buckley from the Dorset Centre for Rural Skills.
Day courses start at 10.00 (9.30 for coffee) and finish at 4.00pm - lunch/coffee etc. provided. Cost £40.00 per day - £70 both days
Sat 16th and Sun 17th we have a Traditional Building Skills and Crafts event where conservation craftsmen can demonstrate their skills and products. You might find some of the trades people taking part very useful to talk to.
Sun 17th we are running guided tours for the public of the closed area of the castle. It looks fantastic at the moment - long grass and vegetation everywhere, quite 18th Century romantic!
There will also be a demonstration of dry stone walling by the South West England Dry Stone Walling Association.
These details were all sent to me by Pam White who is the NT contact.
