Not technically period question re plaster

Doing the kitchen and have stripped the lining paper and its taken off all the paint back to bare Gypsum plaster, prob 40 year old and really dry. I have done a test patch with clay paint undiluted and it has taken really well and looks like it will stick.

My question is do I really need to do a mist coat on this?

Possibly not, but it doesn't take long and if it did stop the paint flaking off at a later date then well worth the little extra effort now.

Old, dry plaster will still suck up the moisture. If there's a layer of paint over it's OK, but bare old plaster might have wallpaper paste on the surface as well.

Sounds like they might have missed out on a mist coat forty years ago.

Yes I think they did. But has anyone put clay paint on gypsum plaster. My test patch undiluted went on really well so I may just go for it.

Yep, I have. I slightly thinned the first coat with water to make the painting easier, as it was hard work otherwise, then did an undiluted second coat
