Hi sorry but I inherited this fender with my cottage, after living with it a year it is just too big for the room and want to get rid.. But I can't find anything like it online so have no idea what it's worth?? Or how to flog it :wink: it has no writing on it anywhere. Hubby informs me it is brass, I have no idea how old it is?? Any body recognise it?? Thanks x

If you really don't want it then you don't really need a price if you put it through Ebay. Just decide what is the bare minimum you'd take for it as a starting price.
It's not really my thing, but it seems a shame to sell it if it's been there for a number of years though.

and I'm sure it wouldn't have been cheap, but there is usually a big margin between what a place would pay and what they pass on to the retail customer.

Anything like this, the eBay price is likely to be significantly influenced by your location. Unless you are very good at packing things, it will be 'pickup only', and if you live in the sticks you have to be lucky to find someone, or two people, willing to bid it up and then collect it. When we live in the 'burbs' of Londinium, it was much easier selling large items; now, although we live near two largeish towns, much more difficult.

Fenders are also hit and miss to sell because they only fit a certain size of fireplace, so that's another limiting factor in finding a buyer.
We bought one for our previous house, in the end I had to find one that was adjustable, and even then I had to alter it to fit. Not as nice as yours.



We left it in the house. If the fireplace is working, then the fender sort of belongs to it, a sort of moveable fixture imho.

Might be better just to take it to an Antiques dealer and sell it. Polish it first or you'll get peanuts.... although then you might find you do like it after all. They only need polishing once a year.

Hard to say much about age and value without better pics. It could be a high-quality item of some age, or a ghastly bit of modern tat.
I believe there are cameras nowadays with inbuilt illumination.

I agree though that yours looks quite comfy in place, if it has been there a long time, it does perhaps deserve to stay.

As you'll have seen from the ads that Her Ladyship posted, this type of fender is called "club fender". Some have side seats like yours; some are seat height all the way around have upholstery right round the top.

As others have said, its value is what somebody is prepared to pay for it. As suggested, I would put it on Ebay, or take it to a local sale room (you're likely to get a bigger audience on Ebay). The reserve price is entirely up to you, but I certainly wouldn't pitch it any lower than £50 (I have no expert knowledge - that's an amateur guess). Buyer collects!

Thanks for the replies...apart from the wotsit porn...where do you find this stuff?? :shock: and sorry about the pic... I only have an ipad ...and struggle to use that! I actually love the fender and do feel like it is part of the house hence living with it for a year, but it really is a big showy piece that doesn't really fit with my tiny 16c living room.... It is really heavy hence asking on here first but next step dealers! Thanks x

I think it's worth £250-300 - that's the kind of price tag I'd expect to see on Antiques Atlas. It's absolutely gorgeous and you would not believe how many hours I've spent trawling for things with Wedgwood plaques to match my beds in the Campaign Room. If it fitted any of my hearthstones I'd give you £200 and come to where you are to collect or arrange a courier but I expect it's too big. What's the length and depth?

It's neo-classical in inspiration, I think it's Edwardian as they went for aping the Georgian style and that's always been the period of the plaque-inserted furniture I've found online. The beds I bought are Edwardian.

I can see why you love your beautiful club fender but no it isn't right for the age of your cottage.

Yes it is quite large.. The inside bit that fits around the hearth is 35cm deep and 122cm wide the overall size including leather pads is 43cm deep and 170cm wide. That is one gorgeous room you got yourself joceandchris! We don't even have a hearth it fits around its just butted up against the wall, it really doesn't "go with" our little cottage it is such a shame

:lol: :lol: :lol: You are such a wit Mr P!!! Thanks for the compliment Duchess, the room took two years and is still not quite finished. I am very pleased with it though and would recommend a tented ceiling for anyone who has a very ugly ceiling and the patience of a saint.

Just had a measure and the club fender would take up half my wall! If it were scaled down to fit my cottage it would be absolutely perfect. It really is for a club or a country house and could be worth quite a bit more than £250. I would Ebay it with a reserve of £300 and see what happens - you will have to polish it and photograph it really nicely though and be prepared to arrange a courier (at the buyer's expense - the sellers usually work out the fee for that and get back to the buyer - that would need explaining in the description).
