Non standard latches

Well, we bought the doors for the house and they are all hung. I'm currently sanding with a fine grade paper and finishing off with Osmo Polyx Oil They are magnificent. However, I'm having a problem sourcing latch mechanisms. I need a latch with a non standard backset to position the spindle at 76mm. The door has mouldings on both side which take the thickness of the door to about 82mm but I can just get longer spindles made. The real problem is that to fit a handle in the middle of the moulding (52mm wide) the position to fix to the spindle needs to be 76mm. I can find bigger latch sets but then the spindle position is at 82mm. I've spent the last week on the Internet trying to find a solution.

I can fit a ball mechanism rather than a latch and then put pull handles on both sides of the doors which solves the problem entirely but I really think we should have lever handles on the doors.

Any ideas?

These people say that the spindles they sell can be cut to size, or tapped ( not sure if that is correct term for cutting thread on the end ) if needed for eg http://www.doorfurnituredirect.co.uk/scpro/bernards/productdetailsmore~productid~2119.htm

Not sure if I've miss-read what you need, but 76mm / 3" tubular latches are widely available? try Screwfix.

A 76 mm standard latch puts the spindle at 56 mm. I need the spindle position to be at 76, so the latch will be longer. The next size latch up puts position at 82. I think I will need to have some made for our requirements.

The spindles are not the problem. It is their positioning that is.

I hate to suggest this... but does the original owner (that you bought your own doors back from) still have the latches that he will now sell you at another inflated price?

I've just measured mine, from the edge of the door to the centre axis of the spindle is 76mm ish.
Try searching for backset 75mm tubular latch

So these would be 4" or 100mm / 102mm latches, it confused me either that or they've changed the way they describe them

The PO didn't get as far as putting door furniture on save the hinges, so I don't have to have that conversation!

I spend a few hours ringing around today and I have some suitable latches ones on order. But I made an error. I omitted to order ones for bathroom doors so we can lock them at appropriate times! Back to the phones tomorrow.

The spindles won't be any use so we will have to make those but that's easy enough.
