I believe (could be wrong) that the bottom staircase is made from 30,000 to 50,000 year old wood mined from a bog in New Zealand. My parents bought a coffee table from the shop.

They're all great, but the first one and the tree trunk are amazing. Beautifully done.

It just goes to show that modern design doesn't neccessarily = bad design.

The book/staircase is a wonderful use of otherwise dead space and wins my vote. I'm also a fan of cantilevered designs....something about the way the mind thinks they look unsafe?

Hmmm, polished wooden treads, no handrail -I think it is unsafe, but not in the way you mean!

It does look great though, and I know what you mean about the way that it looks like it shouldn't able to take the weight that is oddly attractive.

I've seen those 'space-saving' staircases before, often, as Feltwell intends, for access to attics and the like.
But I've always wondered if they meet building regs.

Yes, they can - I believe they have to have handrails both sides, you have to show that you don't have room for a normal staircase, and the room they access is only for occasional use - e.g. a single room loft converson is OK, but access to the only toilet in the house isn't.

I'm going to have to put mine in after building reg sign-off as otherwise the loft area of my garage could be regarded as a room, in which case I need stronger roof trusses, the staircase has to be fully enclosed, smoke alarms in place, insulation etc etc. In reality I just want to go up there occasionally to store things. I may even put a fixed ladder in instead of a staircase, see how the budget and space is going!

Originating in Holland, I believe.

I wonder why they don't fit slides in fire stations. Much safer than the boring old pole - and much more fun!
