I'd like a nice shiney black front door just like the finish on 10 Downing St. how would I get that mirror like finish? (don't say polishing it with £50 pound notes) :lol:

I think you could get close to that finish on wood, but I think it would only work with car paint or similar. Before I bought my house my hobby was restoring guitars and I have refinished a few with cellulose lacquer which can be polished to a very high shine. Even better for a door might be 2 pack polyester as it is harder wearing and thick and shiny. However it is too thick and plasticky for guitars and is also very poisonous to spray without and air fed mask!!!

Being metal, it's probably a powder-coated finish. 'Bomb-proof' as they say.

I'd just have a go with FnB Pitch Black in their full gloss finish! Prepare really well, three coats, very fine grade sandpaper after coat one and two, with each coat do horizontal sections prior to vertical ones.

Hmmm... So it is a period feature that they retained? I guess its not an uncommon dilemma - put it right or leave it quirky?

I'm afraid it still looks daft to me when the rest of the door is going for the "absolute perfection" look, but it won't grate quite so badly in future now that I know there is a good reason for it!

Get a coach painter to do it.

Spray painting was introduced for painting cars because it required less skill and the paint dried quicker. A spray shop standard finish would have got a coach painter sacked.

I wouldnt have thought enamel would have been any good on a front fdoor, although it is metal I suppose. I reckon it's some kind of two pack with a clear coat baked in an oven then highly polished and waxed. Apparently the brass work gets polished every few weeks. It looks like a piano black finish to me. They have a spare door that they swap when one needs refinishing.

Unfortunatly there are very few coach painters left nowadays which is a shame, it's a skill that cannot be learned overnight and unless it gets passed down it will be lost.

A mate of mine used to run a small bus company. He didn't have much money to paint the buses, so he rollered them with coachpaint (synthetic enamel). The finish was very good.
