Next builder problem - he cant apply a flat coat of stucco.

My builder's first attempt patch up a small area of missing stucco in my porch is terrible. I could have done better. Stucco which is imitating high quality ashlar masonry has to be very precise or the illusion is immediately shattered. Most of the job involves stripping the paint from the stucco. I am now wondering if I should ask him to stop once he has done this and engage someone else to do the stucco repairs. He seemed so knowledgeable about stucco work when I talked to him before hiring him.

Has he worked on stucco anywhere else near your house so you can see if it is going to be any good or not? Ask him where else he has worked.

If it's not right then ask him to stop sooner rather than later. There were a couple of things where my builders were out of their comfort zone but kept going because they didn't want to let me down :roll:. When I stopped them they were pleased.

It might be that he/she'd hoped to engage someone else to do the finish and they've been let down but are pressing ahead.
In any case don't let them undo the good work in careful stripping by bodging the repairs - you'll both be happier in the long run.

Seriously, Nigel, I know it's very difficult to sack someone, but if he can't do the job you want, I can't see any alternative.

I heartily agree. Don't let him Nigel - your gut feeling will be right I'm sure. He might get better as he goes along but your lovely house has got to be perfect. Xx
