Newbie question about exposing beams

Hi all, I have recently purchased a 250 yr old cottage that has had all ceilings artexed over at some point, I really like the idea of exposing the beams but am not 100% on the best procedure. I guess first things first is to establish wether the ceilings are asbestos??

I take it that the existing beams are original and worth exposing and not being subjected to " vandalism " in their lifetime.

Try to check this out if you can by gaining access and inspect as much as you can from above , you will have a clearer idea as to how you should tackle the job before you rip the ceilings.
