We had a new banister installed this year, along with a newal post and top and bottom of the stairs. We have had a acorn style post cap like this one:

However, we have asked for a matching one to be fitted to the bottom newal post, but the joiner claims it is a safety hazard for children. Is this correct, or is he avoiding the issue, as he has rounded off the top?

The only safety hazard I can imagine is to ones crown jewels as you come sliding down the banister backwards :lol:

The best way to protect children from sliding down stairs related injuries would surely to have a great big acorn shaped newal post at the bottom. I recall a similar architectural detail in my childhood home. It was an annoying feature but I was very careful never to slide into it. Children are supplied with brakes!
