Hi everyone,
Whilst we are fortunate enough to have quite a few originals in our house, we also have lots of 60's 'improvements' and with the sky high prices of reclaimed historic fabric, decided to make our own oak beams and doors where required.
As you can see from the photos, we have the original spine beam and have made new joists to one side of the room (we'll do the other side later as it wasn't falling down). Clearly we'll strip the black paint off the spine beam, but then I'm not sure what or indeed whether to finish it and the new joists with. Also, the same question goes for our lovely new plank door. Should we stain them or leave them natural and if natural should be wax of oil them (especially the door) to protect from dirty little hands (it's a kids room) ? Are there any products out there that will really enhance the wood ?
Thanks
P.S. To reassure you, we are not responsible for the vandalism that was done to the original timber stud wall which is the only example remaining of its kind in our 17th C stone farmhouse. However, since we uncovered it, we have repaired it as best we can and once complete will lime plaster it, retaining what remains of the original plaster that appears to have been made with clay and straw.
